You approach Lake Pend Oreille via a long bridge. The lake was named after another local Indian tribe which insists that--despite the name explorers foisted on them--they didn't traditionally wear earrings (pend d'oreille is French for "earring"). Locals pronounce it "ponderAY."
You can go swimming on a pleasant beach in the public park here and have a nice dinner at one of the local restaurants.
The city of Sandpoint is smaller but more sophisticated and arty than Coeur d'Alene. It hosts a summer festival worth checking out.
