Once you're in the city you can prepare to get out of it at a Seattle Institution, the flagship store of the outdoor recreation coop chain known as REI. It's an amazing place to shop or just hang out, with a free parking garage; but not exactly easy to get to because of the way the limited-access Aurora cuts across neighboring streets, many of them intersecting at odd angles.
Here's one route. Get onto Denny Way heading west, with the freeway just behind you. Turn right on Fairview, then right on John Street. Go all the way to the end, and REI will be ahead on your right.
As you climb out of the parking lot, stop to enjoy their artificial waterfall.
