The canyon was also involved in another shameful massacre. As the Nez Perce led by Chief Joseph fled the pursuing American Army, they crossed the canyon. A few miles beyond the rim the troops caught up with them and used its superior firepower to slaughter about half the group, including women and children.

Many people visit the Canyon to follow in the Lewis & Clark trail. They passed through here on their way to the Columbia River.
