If you crave a stroll in the woods rather than along a beach, you can head for the somewhat facetiously named Grand Forest--three parcels of land purchased by local conservationists for the public's enjoyment, two of which you can walk in. It is now a public park. The biggest section opens off of Miller Road a little north of Bainbridge Gardens and before Arrow Point Road. Look for the sign on the right as you head north, and the little parking lot near the northern end of the park. There's more than one entrance, and plenty of room to ramble in some beautiful woods. In rainy weather, boots are advisable.
It's possible to get lost in the winding trails of the Grand Forest, though if you keep heading in any direction you'll eventually hit a park boundary or the street. For a simpler and very beautiful hike, leave your car in the Grand Forest parking lot on Miller Road and cross the street to walk the Forest to Sky trail, which leads to Battle Point Park. In spring, look for blooming skunk cabbage in the swampy areas along the trail.
