Research Exchange Usage Information

Item Visits

The "Item Visit" count represents how many times an item's page has been requested by a web browser.  For example, this is an item page:

Visits by web crawlers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler) are filtered out as much as possible.

Primary File Downloads

Each item in Research Exchange has one or more files attached to it.  The first of these files is called the "primary" file.  The "primary file downloads" count represents how many times that first file has been downloaded.  For example, if a user clicked the highlighted link below, it would trigger a "Primary File Download":

Because Research Exchange is constantly being crawled and indexed by Internet search engines, many users will find files on Research Exchange via other tools such as Google Scholar without actually visiting Research Exchange.  In such cases, the user will skip the item page altogether and go straight to the file, which is why the "Primary File Downloads" count is often larger than the "Item Visits" count. Downloads by web crawlers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler) are filtered out as much as possible.
