Historical NoteReturn to Top
Men’s physical education at WSU dates to the campus’s first days, while women's physical education began at WSU in 1901. In 1964 the departments of Physical Education for Women and Physical Education for Men were created out of the College of Education; the two departments merged in 1985.
Carol Gordon held the positions of Chair of Physical Education for Women from 1962 to 1983, and Director of Athletics for Women from 1962 to 1975.

The collection consists of various departmental reports, management records relating to WSU’s Camp Easter Seal covering 1968-1983, faculty meeting minutes from both men’s (1963-1982) and women’s (1947-1982) physical education departments, and documents relating to the athletic departments’ efforts to come to terms with Title IX legislation in the 1970s. Also included are Women’s Physical Education Chair Carol Gordon’s clippings, articles, and correspondence collected during the development, evolution, and enactment of Title IX, both nationally and on the WSU campus.

Arrangement
The collection is loosely organized into two series, though there is some overlap between them. Series one is primarily administrative documents and reports originating within the two Departments of Physical Education (Men’s and Women’s); these are organized alphabetically by subject, and then chronologically within each subject.
Series two are documents collected by Women’s Physical Education Chair and Director of Athletics for Women Carol Gordon, dealing with Title IX from its introduction to enactment. Documents here are arranged alphabetically by their originating organization; notable here are two Washington State University folders pertaining to a campus Title IX Task Force and to a campus Title IX Review Committee looking at the legislation’s effects on WSU. An informal chronological subseries follows the organization folders, containing news clippings, articles, and other small documents.
Acquisition Information
Records were transferred to Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections on June 26, 2018 by Jeanne Therrien of the College of Education, and retained as UA2018-05.
