Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Arnold Satterthwait (1920-2012) was born in Georgetown, Pennsylvania to Charles Shoemaker and Elizabeth Satterthwait. He attended Haverford College as an undergraduate, and went on to earn his Master's Degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He then earned a PhD from Harvard. Around the 1950s, Satterthwait spent ten years in Saudi Arabia teaching Arabic to employees of the Arabian American Oil Company. Satterthwait was a life-long Quaker and did not believe in war or violence. He refused to register for the draft and spent four years in prison. He became a professor of linguistics and computer science at Washington State University, and because of his Quaker background, he was involved in anti-war protests at WSU. He taught at the university from 1963 until 1982, and retired to Moscow, Idaho.
