Biography/History
Jacob L. Stokes (1912-1992) worked as a Professor of Bacteriology and Public Health at Washington State University. He earned his Ph.D. from Rutgers University and subsequently worked for the USDA's Western Regional Research Laboratory (WRRL), known as of 2018 as the Western Regional Research Center in Albany, California. He then began teaching at WSU in 1959. He became the third chairman of the Department of Bacteriology and Public Health and during his time at WSU he was a consultant to the United States Public Health Service, the president of the Northwest Branch of the American Society for Microbiology, and was sent to Moscow, USSR, to present at the International Congress for Microbiology.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of papers of Washington State University faculty member and bacteriologist James Stokes. It includes binders of notes both for Stokes' professional work and his teaching. This includes his work at the Western Regional Research Laboratory (WRRL) of the United States Department of Agriculture, and Hopkins Marine Station, a research lab operated by Stanford University, as well as at WSU. These binders largely contain experiment notes and literature reviews related to Stokes' research. Additionally, the collection contains lecture notes and experiment plans for Stokes's undergraduate and graduate courses at WSU. The collection also contains a large assortment of photographic slides, some glass, related to Stokes' teaching. Most depict specimens.
