Diverse documents, chiefly of Spanish colonial origin. Included are legal documents, discussions of Spanish politics, biographies, and correspondence dealing with such matters as Inquisition trials, the Mexican Congress of 1823 and piracy. Includes letters of Leonardo Saldaña regarding Viceroy Juan de Palafox.

Acquisition Information

The collection of Spanish Language Manuscripts was acquired for the Washington State University Libraries by Dr. J. Horace Nunemaker between 1939 and 1944. Part of the collection was purchased with funds provided by the Early Birds Club, while the rest was purchased with funds from the Friends of the Library and with funds provided by the University. The purchases in Spain were made in 1939; those made in Mexico were made between 1941 and 1944. A printed notice issued on behalf of King Ferdinand VII and bearing his signature was donated to the Library by Mr. Alfred C. Langdon, class of 1918.
