University Archivist Mark O\u2019English provided an exhibit tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWashington State Rising\u201d follows the journey of college students in Washington who joined Black Student Unions and sparked protest campaigns during the \u201960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These photos show the numerous student protests and marches during the 1969-70 school year, including pictures of students taking over the French Administration building, protesting both the invasion of Cambodia and the shooting at Kent State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/libraries.wsu.edu\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-07-at-10.17.17-AM-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-824\" width=\"263\" height=\"176\" \/><figcaption>Student protests from 1969-1970. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019English said the main picture shows Ralph Atkins, the only Black student in the protest, holding the mic. It brought up many sensitive matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also made many posters for racism workshops at WSU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These examples have some interesting visuals, especially one of Uncle Sam with various skin colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going through the exhibit, it was surprising to see how many students actively engaged in racism issues and protested. All these actions and efforts are what make it possible for people of many colors to study in college freely today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/libraries.wsu.edu\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-07-at-10.18.42-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-828\" width=\"256\" height=\"172\" \/><figcaption>WSU students created posters for racism workshops. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many forms of discrimination are still going on, and we should stay alert to them. Many people are still fighting to regain their rights, as evidenced by the Jan. 17 strike by the union representing academic student employees across the WSU system.
