Cougar Commons Update: Three Events Planned, Furniture Installation in Progress

WSU Libraries’ Cougar Commons, the academic support center for university students in Terrell Library’s first floor near the reference area, will hold three events in late September and early October on time management and résumé writing. Workers are also installing furniture in the space in preparation for a Cougar Commons grand opening later in the fall semester.

  • A time-management skills workshop is being planned with First-Year Programs from 4–5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to help students develop strategies to make their academic experience a success, such as creating a daily plan, prioritizing tasks, establishing time limits, managing distractions, and more.
  • WSU’s Academic Success and Career Center (ASCC) will hold a Résumé Café from 1–3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, where students can receive one-on-one networking and résumé support from company representatives. ASCC offers academic advising and coaching, career advice and exploration, and internship search assistance, as well as by-appointment tutoring at the Cougar Commons.
  • When do students really need to start on that paper? Find out when at a session from 3:10–4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, in partnership with the Undergraduate Writing Center. Time-management tips and the writing process will be discussed.

The Cougar Commons continues to offer drop-in research help by WSU Libraries’ Ask Us! staff and drop-in writing consultations by the Undergraduate Writing Center.

Erica England, WSU Libraries’ first-year experience librarian and the Cougar Commons coordinator, said workers started installing the majority of new furniture on Sept. 21. The second batch of furniture for the Cougar Commons area and other library spaces should arrive and be fully installed by the end of October. The new Cougar Commons space will be unveiled during a grand opening being planned for early November.
